Man United fans left furious over penalty decision vs Chelsea

2 min read

Manchester United fans were left furious by the decision not to award the Reds a penalty against Chelsea.

After Edouard Mendy had palmed away a free-kick from Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Callum Hudson-Odoi challenged each other for the loose ball, with the Chelsea attacker reaching it first.

Yet the ball bounced up and hit Hudson-Odoi on the hand, subsequently also hitting him on the arm, with the VAR instructing referee Stuart Attwell to consult the pitchside monitors over whether a penalty should be given for handball.

After checking the replay, Attwell decided a penalty should not be given, much to the bemusement of United fans.

Attwell’s decision was also criticised by Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, who said that, under current rules, it should have been a penalty.

He said: “I hate the current handball law but under the present guidelines that’s a penalty.”

United saw officiating decisions go against them in a draw with West Brom and a defeat by Sheffield United in recent weeks, with Harry Maguire claiming the Reds are getting nothing from referees after rivals had commented on decisions earlier in the season.

Instead, Maguire said that the Reds must make sure they do not have to rely on decisions to win.

“Ever since other people from other teams spoke about us we’ve had absolutely nothing from the referee or VAR,” Maguire said after the draw with West Brom.

“At the moment we’re playing without them so we’ve got to make sure we’re not leaving the game in the hands of the referee or the VAR.”
