Manchester United’s supporters have hit back at Jose Mourinho after he claimed Ben Chilwell is more worthy of a place in England’s Euro 2020 team than Luke Shaw.
Dean Henderson was chosen by the Portuguese between the sticks at the expense of Jordan Pickford.
However, ahead of a crunch Group D opener against the Croats it was a ‘loaded’ decision at left-back which sparked the attention of United fans.
Explaining why he thinks Gareth Southgate should choose Chilwell over Shaw at Euro 2020, Mourinho said: “Left-back I would go with Chilwell, I wouldn’t think twice. I would go with Chilwell.
“I know that he plays normally at Chelsea with a five, but he is intelligent and he covers the space, the diagonals that come inside very well. He is dangerous in attack. He’s good in the air, he’s good in set-pieces. He can defend well a possible long build-up from Croatia on the first phase.”
Asked if he had thought about Shaw, Mourinho added: “No, no. I think he had a good season, clearly an evolution in terms of emotion, professionalism – clearly that. I think Chilwell has something more, especially with the ball and the way he thinks. He’s very calm under pressure. I like Chilwell, I would go with this back four.”
Mourinho’s England team to face Croatia (4-2-3-1): Henderson; Walker, Stones, Mings, Chilwell; Phillips, Rice; Foden, Mount, Grealish; Kane.
