Man United fans fuming over what Maguire said after Martial red card

2 min read

Manchester United are still dealing with the aftermath of their embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

That defeat followed a loss at Crystal Palace and a rather unconvincing win against Brighton, leaving United with just three points to their name from the opening three matches of the new Premier League season.

On an afternoon to forget, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side also lost Anthony Martial after he was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

In reality, though, that doesn’t tell the full story as United can certainly feel aggrieved that Erik Lamela was not issued with a similar punishment after his involvement in the incident.

Among those left furious by the decision was Marcus Rashford, who saw the events unfold in front of him at Old Trafford, and he questioned the decision.

Remarkably, he found himself arguing with United captain Harry Maguire, who defended the decision, and the words he spoke have now been revealed.

After referee Anthony Taylor brandished a yellow at Lamela, Rashford said: “Why? It’s the same [as Martial’s offence]?”, to which Maguire replied: “It is not violent conduct. They have checked.”

Before he could finish, Rashford interrupted: “He has elbowed him!” And the centre-back retorted: “They have checked and said it is not.”

A more incensed Rashford said back: “How?! How is it not?!”, and United fans have agreed with what the forward had to say and the replays showing he did have a point.

Maguire’s stance on the situation and actions have since attracted fury from many United fans on social media who believe that, as captain, he should have been arguing the same case to the officials.
