Man United fans disagree with Paul Scholes over Anthony Martial

Manchester United fans disagree with Paul Scholes‘ claim that his former side should be prioritising a new centre forward instead of a deal for Jadon Sancho during the transfer window.

Sancho remains a priority target for United on the back of an exceptional campaign in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund denied reports that the Reds are in advanced talks for the England international and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to be drawn on the speculation following the win against LASK.

Harry Kane has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months and Scholes believes he would be an upgrade on current No.9 Anthony Martial.

He told BT Sport: “[United] have three wide-stroke-centre-forwards who are very similar to Sancho. They might not be as good as him but they could be. If that was Harry Kane we were talking about, I think we would be more desperate. We need a centre forward but Ole doesn’t seem like he wants that type of player anymore.”

Scholes went on to praise Martial’s development under Solskjaer and believes the Frenchman is now hungry for goals.

MEN Sport reported United were realistic over the possibility of signing Kane and were focused on more attainable and essential targets.

United fans believe a move for the Tottenham captain would not be wise given Martial’s recent form.

Solskjaer revealed Martial was begging for the chance to come on during the win against LASK and promised to get on the score sheet.

The forward delivered by netting the winner to surpass Marcus Rashford to become United’s top scorer this season.

Solskjaer said: “Anthony has upped his work-rate. He’s working harder in training, he’s working harder in the games; his physical stats show that. He’s been an absolute joy to work with.

“His attitude has been spot on and him and Marcus have found and hit off a really good relationship. And with Mason and Bruno coming in, that’s improved us creating chances, the team’s creating more chances. And tonight great link play with Juan [Mata].

“We needed to win the game. Of course, I wanted to but I couldn’t get all of [the substitutes] on. We want to win and Antho was begging to come on. But he promised a goal as well, so well done!”
