Martial sent home from United training ground

Anthony Martial departed Manchester United ’s training ground after only 11 minutes on Monday morning.

The Frenchman has been suffering with an illness and after reporting to the club’s Carrington training complex, he was sent home as he remains unable to train.

The 24-year-old travelled to Southampton with the rest of his teammates but was taken ill and remained at the team’s hotel on Sunday.

Cavani apologises for Instagram post

Edinson Cavani has ‘sincerely apologised’ for causing offence with an Instagram post in the aftermath of United’s win against Southampton.

The Uruguayan international was in fine form on Sunday, scoring twice and assisting Bruno Fernandes during a 3-2 comeback victory.

After the game, Cavani shared a post from a friend on Instagram and added a caption which read: ‘Gracias Negrito’.

The translation of the phrase is ‘thanks black’, but Cavani was responding to a friend that wrote: “Asi te quiero, Matador.” That translates as: “I love you like this, Matador.” Cavani is nicknamed ‘El Matador’.

The striker was later informed the post could be interpreted offensively, and subsequently deleted the story.

The Football Association will look into the post to examine it further, but Cavani released a statement through the club.

“The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game.

Diallo has since agreed to join United in the New Year and his performance at the weekend ended an 11-month wait for a first-team opportunity.

Diallo was a second-half substitute for Papu Gomez in the 77th minute but Atalanta ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat to Verona.
