Man United evening headlines as Madrid’s Varane transfer stance explained

3 min read

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Tuesday, March 2.

Madrid open to selling Raphael Varane

Real Madrid are open to selling Raphael Varane as the towering centre-back enters the final 18 months of his contract.

Varane has been central to Madrid’s success over the past decade, but the French World Cup winner has rejected any new deals offered and MEN Sport understands that Madrid are not confident that they will sign him to a new deal.

As such, the Spanish giants are open to selling the 27-year-old this summer as they take the chance to recoup a fee, rather than losing him for on a free transfer a year later.

United are targeting a new centre-back in the summer as they continue to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in an attempt to close the gap on Manchester City.

Injury update on Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani could return for United ahead of their midweek Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

Cavani has not played since the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on February 14 due to a muscular injury.

However, the Uruguayan striker returned to training on Tuesday and could be involved on Wednesday evening.

On Cavani’s potential return, Solskjaer told reporters: “We’ve had a training session this morning. Of course, it was a light one and we’re looking okay.

“There are a couple of doubts for tomorrow that we have to give as much time as possible. Edinson trained, he’s joined in, that’s good, let’s hope there’s no reaction after the session and hopefully he will travel with the squad.”

Ferdinand wants one of two superstars

Rio Ferdinand believes that United should sign one of Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland this summer, should either become available.

Haaland snubbed United to sign with Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. The Norwegian international has maintained a remarkable scoring rate ever since and could yet end up at Old Trafford this summer.

Meanwhile, Mbappe is in the final 18 months of his contract. Paris Saint-Germain will have to sell this summer if they do not want to lose him on a free transfer next summer. And Ferdinand believes that United should be in the mix for either if the opportunity presents itself this summer.

Manchester United were denied a penalty in controversial fashion against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players were furious that Callum Hudson-Odoi wasn’t penalised for a handball, as they had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. The point leaves United 12 points behind leaders Man City, with Crystal Palace the next opponents.

“Cavani, yes, he’s a good stopgap but [United need] a centre forward,” he told his FIVE YouTube channel.

“[But] If people like Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe are available, you can’t allow them to go somewhere else and you need to move heaven and earth to get them here.

“United are used to having superstars and those boys would change the narrative at this football club, that’s how good they are.

“There’s room for improvement and opportunity to improve this squad, there’s players out there available, it seems. We need to be in the mix.”
