Man United duo Teden Mengi and Henderson praised after Aston Villa friendly

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lauded the performances of Dean Henderson and Teden Mengi after Manchester United’s friendly defeat to Aston Villa.

Henderson made his first appearance for the United senior side nine years after joining the club’s academy in the absence of David de Gea at Villa Park and Mengi replaced Odion Ighalo in the second-half.

Solskjaer compared Mengi, 18, to Matthijs de Ligt earlier this week and the Mancunian could get more first-team exposure following his debut against LASK in the Europa League last month.

Henderson is bidding to oust De Gea to become the United number one and enjoyed a confident afternoon in the 1-0 reverse before he made way for Lee Grant in the last 15 minutes.

“The result wasn’t the main thing,” Solskjaer told MUTV. “Some positives, as well though: some good positives, some individual positives.

“I thought Deano showed his authority back there and he plays as a proper Man United keeper, especially second-half, [and] you see Teden when he comes on what an exciting prospect he is.”

Teenagers Ethan Galbraith and Anthony Elanga also emerged in the second-half for their first minutes in the first-team and the former went close with a curling effort.

Galbraith, 19, was included in the United squad for the latter stages of the Europa League last month and is not due to go out on loan before the transfer window closes on October 5.

“Young Ethan Galbraith has been with us in the summer training in the Europa League and he gets minutes today,” Solskjaer added. “And you can see he’s got less time.

“I spoke to him after. A couple of times he gets caught on the ball but that’s the learning he needs and that’s gonna make him next time on the pitch he’ll be ready for it.”
