Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has completed his move to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Dutchman’s contract was set to expire in the summer and United were keen to extend his stay at Old Trafford but were snubbed as he felt ‘undervalued’ by the terms offered.
A source close to the player told the MEN that while Fosu-Mensah was sad to be leaving United he is ‘excited to get a fresh start and show people what he is really capable of.’
The versatile defender, who arrived at the club in 2014 from the Ajax academy and spent time on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Leverkusen which runs until the summer of 2024.
“A step into a really interesting and very strong league in which Bayer 04 has been one of the best teams for years. I’m really looking forward to this team and also to working with Peter Bosz, ” Fosu-Mensah said on the move.
“In the past few days I’ve talked a lot with the coach, and conversations with Simon Rolfes and Rudi Voller have convinced me that there are great prospects in Leverkusen. Both for me personally and for us as a team. It’s going to be really exciting. ”
The Bundesliga club’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, said: “Timothy Fosu-Mensah is a technically adept, fast and physically strong defender who can be used both as a right-back and in the center.
“With his signing, we have not only won another top alternative for the defence after the failures of Santiago Arias and Mitchell Weiser. Tim is still young and capable of development. He will also help us in perspective. “
His thoughts were echoed by fellow director Rudi Voller, who labelled Fosu-Mensah as ‘a valuable addition to our squad’. He added: “We are facing great sporting challenges in the coming weeks. For this we need resilient players who consistently deliver their top performance.
