Man United ace Marcus Rashford explains on-pitch partnership with Luke Shaw

3 min read

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has opened up about his on-field connection with team-mate Luke Shaw, describing it as ‘simple”.

Rashford and Shaw both started regularly for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season down the left flank and their partnership saw both players register their best attacking seasons to date in their career, with Rashford registering 22 goals and 15 assists while Shaw got seven assists and one goal.

Those performances meant that both men were selected by England manager Gareth Southgate for the 26-man squad for Euro 2020 this summer, and both players are expected to be part of the starting line-up in the opening game against Croatia this Sunday.

Now during the England camp preparing for the tournament, Rashford has opened up about the partnership with Shaw and says it’s something that has come with time.

Speaking to The Times , Rashford said: “It’s something we’ve had a lot of time to work on and grow into understanding each other’s game.

“I feel we’re a threat on that side. That’s what it’s about: it’s about trying to connect with your team-mates.

“A lot of the things we do are simple but they’re effective so we have to keep trying to improve and getting into dangerous areas.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing with him. He’s a great player and going into a tournament you can have connections like that all over the pitch.”

The United number 10 also spoke about the England squad and their chances of winning the tournament for the first time, with their best-ever performance previously coming at Euro 96, and believes the togetherness of the squad could be a huge factor.

“The togetherness is great and among this squad now there are players that have been in the World Cup semi-finals in Russia, players who have been to Euros in France in 2016, players at the Nations League,” Rashford added.

“We’ve grown and developed together and when you have that togetherness it’s easy for young talented players to slide in and play their best football.

“Whether or not you’re starting in the first XI you’ve still got a massive role to play if we want to win the tournament.

“You’re being deluded if you expect 11 players to win seven games in a short space of time.

“We have a lot of young talented players, then a mix with a few older players who have played massive games for their clubs.

“We’ve got a good balance. We’re going to need everyone to win a trophy.”

England start their campaign against Croatia this Sunday, before further group games against Scotland and Czech Republic all taking place at Wembley Stadium.
