Maguire condemns racist abuse aimed at Manchester United’s Martial and Tuanzebe

Harry Maguire has labelled the racist abuse aimed at Manchester United’s players following Wednesday’s defeat to Sheffield United as ‘disgusting.’

Users on social media targeted Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe following the 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s bottom side at Old Trafford.

Martial played the full 90 minutes and Tuanzebe was substituted after 83 minutes in what was his first Premier League start since October 2019.

Club captain Maguire has released a statement on Thursday evening condemning the abhorrent abuse suffered by his teammates.

“Yeah, it’s disgusting. I woke up this morning, I was devastated, I was hurt with the result and then I read what’s happened on social media to my team-mates,” he told United’s official site. “It made me feel sick.

“There’s no place for it. They’re definitely no fans of this club, we don’t associate with them. We don’t want their support, so no, it’s so disappointing.

“It hurts that it’s still going on in this day and age. The club have acted, but for sure something needs to change.”

United released a statement earlier in the day and called for social media sites to ‘strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behaviour.’

“Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night’s game,” the club wrote.

“We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.

“Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our All Red All Equal initiative.

“Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behaviour.”
