Luke Shaw gives verdict on Donny van de Beek’s impact at Man United

Luke Shaw admitted he has been pleasantly surprise by the impact Donny van de Beek has made in just a few days of Manchester United training.

Van de Beek got his first outing in a United shirt in their 1-0 pre-season defeat by Aston Villa, with the Dutchman one of the players to really impress for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game at Villa Park but United dominated the first half thanks to an effective midfield axis comprising Van de Beek and Scott McTominay.

Shaw revealed United’s squad are still getting to know Van de Beek but the initial impressions have been good.

“Really good. It’s all about minutes and he got that,” Shaw told MUTV when asked to assess the Dutchman’s performance against Villa.

“He hasn’t been with us long, obviously he was another who was on international [duty], so he’s done really well considering he’s only trained with us for two days.

“The most important thing is him getting to know the players, knowing how each other play. We’ve got a whole week now to slot him in, but so far so good, he’s a really nice guy and I’m sure he’ll fit in great.”

United were without a number of key players for the Villa game, including Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial. But Shaw admitted it was gutting to taste defeat, even in a pre-season friendly.

“It’s a friendly but obviously disappointing that we didn’t win, and we lost, really disappointed to be honest,” he added.

“But the main focus was obviously getting minutes in the tank. It’s been a very disjointed pre-season really. At the start of pre-season there was only four of us training! But with what’s going on at the moment, quarantine and internationals, it was very difficult for us.

“But we’ve trained hard and [Villa] was about getting minutes and getting ready for next week.”
