Roma made the surprise announcement on Tuesday that Mourinho will be their new manager this summer, replacing Paulo Fonseca who will leave at the end of the season.
And according to SportItalia, Mourinho is already planning to revamp his Roma squad and is looking to bring Matic with him to the Italian capital.
The report claims that Roma have already made an approach to United in order to determine whether a deal could be possible this summer.
Matic, who has remained a reliable squad player since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mourinho at United, signed a contact extension last summer which keeps him at Old Trafford until 2023.
Mourinho also played a key role in bringing Matic to United after they won the Premier League title together during their time at Chelsea.
‘I haven’t had many managers in my life but he is special because he wants to win, always,’ Matic said of Mourinho during their time together at United.
‘You can see when we lose a game, he cannot accept that. Probably that’s why he won more than 20 trophies in his life.
‘He always wants more and more. Even if you win the league, he wants to win again next season. He is like this and the players need to be ready for that.
‘I like it when the manager always wants better and better, so you have to improve. Always do your best. I like this kind of work and relationship.’
