Joao Cancelo explains Man City’s plan to beat Man United

Stopping Manchester United’s counter-attacks will be key to Manchester City’s chances of winning this weekend’s derby, Blues defender Joao Cancelo says.

City are on a run of 21 wins in all competitions, and can break their club-record unbeaten run by avoiding defeat against United on Sunday. Even though United have fallen 14 points behind City, they are 21 Premier League away games unbeaten, so Cancelo knows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are not to be taken lightly.

With City in confident form, Solskjaer might have to be more adventurous than his recent defensive set-ups in big games in order to keep that away run going.

And Cancelo says winning possession back from United will be City’s best chance of gaining a positive result themselves.

“The moment we lose the ball, we react very fast,” he told ManCity.com, describing that aspect of City’s game as the secret behind their recent success.

“Sometimes when I watch our videos, I can see the moment one of us loses possession, within seconds we have lots of players behind the ball. I believe that is the secret for a team’s success. We are a very integrated team and that has been visible on the pitch.

“United is a team that likes to counterattack. They have very talented and fast players upfront and it is vital that we stop their attacks, which is their strength.

“By doing that, we know we are closer to winning this game. In fact, not only this game but against every team.

“I believe this is the route we must follow, that we can continue this approach and we can bring a lot of success to our home this season.”
