How Manchester United should line up vs West Brom

3 min read

Manchester United will definitely be without Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard for their Premier League encounter with West Brom.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have to take risks on Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford, though Mason Greenwood may not be in condition to start having been unwell for a number of days.

United face a Champions League game against Istanbul Basaksehir just three days after the Baggies clash, so rotation and balancing the squad will be key for Solskjaer.

Here, the MEN’s United writers pick their teams to face West Brom:

Dean Henderson is due to play against Istanbul Basaksehir and there can be little harm in giving him his Premier League debut for United. It is pointless to risk Lindelof, so Axel Tuanzebe has to come in and Alex Telles can have his long-awaited Old Trafford debut.

The midfield three has to be the same as at Everton, with two or all of them in line for rests against Basaksehir on Tuesday. Greenwood has been ruled out, so Juan Mata would be the logical lock-picker on the right and Rashford should be fresh enough after avoiding participation for England.

If there is any doubt over Lindelof’s back injury then United should not take a gamble. There are too many games on the horizon and United’s defensive options are already threadbare as it is. Telles is a shoo-in to play at left-back, while Axel Tuanzebe deserves a Premier League start.

The defensive midfield duo pick themselves at the moment, providing United stick with a 4-2-3-1, while it would be good to see Van de Beek included in the side. If Juan Mata can play as a narrow right-sided player, amid Greenwood’s issues, then the Dutchman can do a job as well.

Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Mata would all appear to be better suited to the Basaksehir game in midweek. The Baggies one is more important, though, so Solskjaer must stick to the formula that worked against Everton before the break.

United have several injury doubts this weekend and given the calibre of the opposition and the fact it’s a game at Old Trafford there are no need to take any risks.

Wan-Bissaka, Maguire and Telles are certain starters in defence you would think, but Lindelof has been nursing an injury for a little while and could benefit from a rest, with Tuanzebe coming in.

In midfield this isn’t a game where United should be relying on Fred and McTominay. The latter had a taxing international break with Scotland so can be rested, with Donny van de Beek earning a first Premier League start in a more adventurous midfield.

Rashford has been involved in 25 of United’s last 26 games so could do with a rest. Cavani can start at centre forward, allowing Martial to play from the left and Mata on the right.
