How Edinson Cavani helped Mason Greenwood score Man United winner vs Brighton

2 min read

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed the role Edinson Cavani is having in helping Mason Greenwood at Manchester United — specifically in improving his aerial ability.

Greenwood’s header ensured United took all three points from a scrappy contest with Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday evening, with Solskjaer’s side fighting back from a goal down to win 2-1. Marcus Rashford was also on the scoresheet for the Reds.

Greenwood revealed afterwards he’s been working on his heading behind the scenes at United’s training ground. And Solskjaer admitted working with veteran striker Cavani, 34, has been a major benefit for teenager Greenwood.

“He’s learned from Edi,” said Solskjaer, speaking to BT Sport. “Of course when Edinson is here now — he’s not going to play football forever — the traits of that movement is picked up a little bit. Mason needs to add those goals to his tally, because we know how wonderful a talent he is.

“He played really well tonight and when he can add those goals, we know he’ll be really good.

“Sometimes as a centre-forward it doesn’t work your way and you’ve got to be patient in the box. You know, 5-4-1 can be hard to break down but we got there in the end.”

Solskjaer refrained from giving too much information on the words that were said in the United dressing room at half time, as they trailed Brighton 1-0 to Danny Welbeck’s early goal. He admitted he told his players to compose themselves and saw the reaction he wanted after the break.

“It depends how you compose yourself,” Solskjaer said when asked how he prompted the improvement. “Nothing tactical from what we wanted in the first half. More runs in behind, more movement, better movement.

“Sometimes after international breaks, it takes time and then maybe the fireworks have to be lit at half-time. Very good second half, the first goal [was] good play by Bruno, great finish by Marcus. And the second goal overall was a very good goal.”
