Mason Greenwood joked that he sent Mark Noble ‘back to 1876’ with his eye-catching piece of skill for Manchester United against West Ham.
Greenwood caught viewers’ attention for his piece of skill late on in the first half against the Hammers in midweek as he brought a lofted ball down by the touchline and spun inside past Noble before sprinting forward.
The piece of skill drew similarities with one carried out by Dimitar Berbatov against the same opposition in 2008.
Greenwood confirmed he was watching videos of former United forward Berbatov in preparation for the game.
The forward made the comments whilst playing popular Battle Royale game Call of Duty: Warzone with United teammate James Garner, which was streamed live on Twitch on Thursday evening.
“Everyone is going at Mark Noble because you ripped him,” one member of the group said, prompting laughter.
“I sent him back to what, 1876?” Greenwood replied. “He got spun, bruv. Before the game I was watching Berbatov clips of the spin.”
Rio Ferdinand, who has frequently talked up Greenwood’s potential, reacted after seeing the skill on Twitter, writing: “I love you Nobes but Maceeey Maceeeey wow!”
Peter Crouch joined in the praise, replying: “Scandalous. Don’t do that to Nobes, no one saw it.”
Greenwood is known to be a keen gamer and has taken part in a number of gaming tournaments in recent months, to raise money for several good causes and charities, playing Battle Royale games Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone.
The 19-year-old is also a fan of the EA SPORTS FIFA gaming franchise and has been spotted playing FIFA 21 Ultimate Team online, but despite this, Greenwood still hasn’t been given a realistic face scan on FIFA 21.
Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play Battle Royale game that is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and PC. Despite only being released in March 2020, as of December 2020, the game has an active player base of 85 million players worldwide.
