Harry Maguire backs Anthony Martial amid Manchester United woes

2 min read

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has leapt to the defence of Anthony Martial following his display against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The French forward’s poor start to the new season continued in midweek as he squandered two glorious chance during United’s 3-1 defeat to PSG.

Martial blazed over with the goal gaping and the game deadlocked at 1-1 early in the second-half and soon after had a shot blocked from close range by Marquinhos, who restored PSG’s lead in the 69th minute.

If the 24-year-old had netted either those goals then United might have won the game, or at least secured the one point needed to qualify from Group H with a game to spare.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side know they must avoid defeat away at RB Leipzig next week if they are to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, but Maguire does not blame Martial for their defeat in midweek.

“It is all fine margins,” Maguire told BT Sport after the match. “Martial has scored plenty of goals over the last year or so, so I’m sure he is down in there and disappointed, but he’ll come again and I’m sure he’ll be looking to put it right at the weekend.”
