Gary Neville has batted away criticism of Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s lack of creativity and encouraged Manchester United to sign a new right winger if they are worried about service down the flank.

The Red Devils have had a mixed start to the new season, losing their opening Premier League match to Crystal Palace and then surviving a huge scare against Brighton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer restored Wan-Bissaka to the side for the trip to the Amex, though he was given a tough examination defensively by goalscorer Solly March and offered little going forward.

The England international has received an increasing amount of criticism from fans on social media for his lack of attacking output, having registered just four assists last season – as a comparison, Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold recorded 13.

One fan messaged former United right-back Neville on Twitter to ask his opinion on Wan-Bissaka’s lack of productivity, though he was in no doubt that the issues lie elsewhere.

‘Man Utd have a right-back that cannot cross,’ wrote the fan on social media. ‘What are your thoughts on this?’

Neville replied: ‘I’d do what they did in the 90’s. Get a right winger that can…’

Could Wan-Bissaka and Sancho be the new Neville and Beckham?

The eight-time Premier League winner was clearly referencing both his own, self-confessed lack of attacking ability when he was a player, as well as United’s current pursuit of an attacking spark.

For much of the 90’s, Neville dovetailed with David Beckham down the United right flank; the former providing defensive solidity and the latter inch-perfect delivery.

But United are lacking a genuine, creative right winger in their squad – despite some impressive displays from striker Mason Greenwood in that role – and they have so far struggled to agree a deal for Jadon Sancho.

Neville clearly feels a player of the Borussia Dortmund star’s ilk would negate any need for Wan-Bissaka to be crossing, providing an excellent balance down the right flank.

While United are still hoping to agree a deal for Sancho, the German club have been adamant that he is not for sale and that has seen reports emerge that they are looking to bring in Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele as an alternative.
