Gary Neville is backing Donny van de Beek to come good and go on to be a ‘brilliant’ player for Manchester United despite his early struggles at the club.

The Netherlands international has had a dreadful start to his career at Old Trafford, struggling to get a place in the starting line-up and having little or no impact when he makes it into the team.

The 23-year-old has made just two Premier League starts for the club he joined from Ajax for £40m in the summer and hasn’t scored in the league since coming off the bench and scoring on his debut in the opening game of the season.

Van de Beek looks bereft of confidence and clearly does not have the backing or trust of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite being the most expensive signing of the summer by far.

Neville feels that he needs a boost to morale, and when he gets it the midfielder can still go on to turn out as an excellent signing for the Red Devils.

‘Van de Beek is a very good football player, at the moment he’s having a tough time and I feel sorry for the lad,’ Neville told Webby & O’Neill.

‘Every time I see him on camera I want to hug him, I know I shouldn’t be hugging him because he’s £40m and we’re in coronavirus, but I think, “Oh God, Donny! Donny, come round for tea. Relax.” He must be thinking, “what have I come here for?”

‘I think he’ll be a brilliant player for United because I think he’s a brilliant player, but I don’t think we’ve seen it yet.

‘You’ve been brought in from Ajax for £40m and all of a sudden you’re on the bench. He’s like, “Hang on a minute, you’ve brought me in to be a star here and I’m not even playing.”

‘I’ve not seen that happen before at Manchester United, they’ve bought a player for so much, so highly-rated and he’s just been left completely on the bench.

‘I think he’ll come good.’

Van de Beek started in the FA Cup win over West Ham earlier this week but was brought off with the score at 0-0 after not contributing a great deal.

Solskjaer defended him after the match, though, praising his performance.

‘I thought the first half we and Donny played really well. We created the spaces we wanted to and he was part of that,’ said Solskjaer after the fifth round win.

‘He did his job really well, he was clean and tidy, had half a chance when Alex pulled the ball back to him. Of course, the second half the whole team fell off a little bit and we wanted to make a few changes.’
