Gary Lineker hails Man United duo in 3-3 draw with Everton

Manchester United may have ended up ultimately disappointed against Everton – but a couple of their players still managed to catch the eye.

United were denied victory by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last-gasp equaliser to earn Carlo Ancelotti’s men a dramatic 3-3 draw in Saturday night’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

The home side looked on course for all three points – having led 2-0 at half-time and 3-2 going into the dying moments of the match – but had to settle for a point in the end as Calvert-Lewin struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

It had all started so well for United, with Edinson Cavani opening the scoring in the 24th minute and Bruno Fernandes doubling the lead just before the break.

Everton hit back after the interval through Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez, before Scott McTominay regained the lead for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

The visitors had the final say – but Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was certainly impressed by the goalscoring contributions of Cavani and Fernandes.

During the game, Lineker took to Twitter to hail the United pair.

After Cavani headed home the opener from inside the six-yard box, Lineker tweeted: “Another illustration from Cavani of how to find space in a relatively crowded area.

“Guess where you think the ball will go, attack that space before the pass/cross is made and if the ball goes in that area, you’ve got a great chance to score.

“Surprising how few strikers get it.”

And when Fernandes curled a sumptuous right-foot shot past Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen from just outside the area with 45 minutes on the clock, Lineker added: “That was utterly wondrous from @B_Fernandes8.”

Solskjaer was also impressed, saying: “He (Fernandes) can hit a ball whichever way he wants.

Manchester United smashed nine goals past Southampton on Tuesday night as they bounced back from disappointing results against Sheffield United and Arsenal in emphatic fashion.

The game was effectively over as a contest inside the first two minutes as Southampton were reduced to 10 men, but United still had to find the goals and they did exactly that, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (two), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James all getting on the scoresheet.

“He can hit it straight, he can hit it with a whip, with a bend, with a dip, so it was a fantastic goal.”

And on Cavani’s goal, the United boss said: “What a cross from Marcus (Rashford). That’s the dream for a striker, just to be on the end of that one.”
