Four players United could sign from the EFL after deadline day

3 min read

It was a busy day at Manchester United yesterday as the international transfer window for closed for the summer.

Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles were signed late to add their names to the squad list for the coming season, after Donny van de Beek’s arrival earlier in the window.

But if the club still wants to add players after last night’s deadline, they will still have a lifeline as things work a little differently this year.

The deadline to sign players from the EFL has been extended until next Friday, October 16, and there are some talented individuals that could potentially play a role for the club, following in the footsteps of Daniel James, signed from Swansea City last summer.

With all that in mind, here are the latest odds from Sky Bet surrounding three Football League players who they believe are most likely to make a late switch to Old Trafford.

David Brooks – 4/1

Sheffield United are the favourites to sign the highly-rated 23-year-old midfielder, who first caught the year for Chris Wilder’s Blades before making the switch to Bournemouth in 2018.

But Manchester United are just behind Sheffield United in the running, and have been linked with his signature in the past.

The Wales international only made nine Premier League appearances last term, returning from a serious ankle injury, but had established himself as a talented and technically-gifted midfielder in the season prior.

Solskjaer has previously spoken about “exploiting” the transfer market this summer, and with Bournemouth back down in the Championship, there could be an opportunity for a cut-price deal.

Ismaila Sarr – 11/8

Having scored twice against the champions Liverpool in their first league defeat last season, Senegal international Ismaila Sarr was strongly tipped to arrive at Anfield following Watford’s relegation in the summer.

However, with the title-winners adding Diogo Jota to their ranks, it doesn’t appear that they’re still in the market for a wide forward this summer.

MEN Sport understands United made a bid for the 22-year-old winger, who remains Watford’s record signing after his reported £27m move from Ligue 1 side Rennes last summer. The bid was on the basis of it being a season-long loan, but Watford insisted that they wanted a permanent transfer.

He registered five goals and a further four assists in the Premier League for the Hornets last season, and would represent an alternative option in the wide attacking areas if a deal can’t be done for Jadon Sancho or Ousmane Dembele.

Josh King – 4/1

Represented by Jim Solbakken, a close friend of Solskjaer’s, Josh King was linked with a move back to Old Trafford back in January but it never came to pass.

The Norwegian international had previously represented the club at academy level, with a couple of first-team appearances coming in the cup competitions

Latterly a mainstay of Bournemouth’s five-year stint in the top-flight, the 28-year-old scored 48 goals in 131 Premier League appearances for Eddie Howe’s Cherries.

Fulham are the favourites for his signature, followed by Tottenham and then United. Aston Villa, Brighton and Everton are all listed as outsiders.

Todd Cantwell – 20/1

One of the bright sparks of Norwich’s miserable relegation campaign last year, Todd Cantwell caught the eye by scoring six Premier League goals for the ailing Canaries.

Daniel Farke has left the 22-year-old academy graduate out of their recent matchday squads in the Championship, amid speculation that a departure from Carrow Road is imminent.

Leeds United are considered the frontrunners in the race to sign him, while Manchester United are considered long-shots in the running alongside Bayern Munich and Newcastle.
