Five centre-backs Man Utd can sign to save millions

3 min read

Manchester United must get their transfer business right this summer, but don’t necessarily have to spend big to make that happen.

The Manchester Evening News recently explained that the Red Devils are exploring the possibility of recruiting players potentially available on free transfers next year, with high-profile names such as Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Varane among those whose deals are set to expire.

And there’s no stopping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer beginning to piece together key additions to the group, with central defence a current area of the pitch that is requiring attention.

Here we look at a host of options Solskjaer can consider which wouldn’t involve the club breaking the bank to fund their arrivals.

David Alaba

The experienced Bayern Munich defender has confirmed he will be leaving the club after 13 years in the summer, having failed to agree new terms with the German giants.

At 28, Alaba still has plenty to offer at the highest level of the game and would be a shrewd acquisition for any team.

An extremely adaptable player, the Austrian defender converted from being a left-back to a central defender at Bayern and has even operated in a defensive midfield position when required.

Wages could prove to be a stumbling block in this deal, though a lack of transfer fee would surely make this a transfer worth considering.

Another big-name player out of contract this summer.

Ramos has been stalling over a new deal with Real Madrid and looks to have made up his mind regarding his decision to stay or go.

A natural leader in defence, the Spaniard would be a welcomed addition to a rearguard that has proved too easy to breach at times this campaign.

Jerome Boateng

Boateng, similarly to Alaba, is approaching the end of his time at the Allianz Arena.

Currently in his tenth season in the Bundesliga, the towering German defender would bring a wealth of experience to Old Trafford and could consider himself in contention for a starting spot.

A World Cup, Champions League and Bundesliga winner, the 32-year-old could bring a winning mentality to the team as United continue to target their first trophy of the Solskjaer reign.

Ezequiel Garay

A previous target for Manchester United in recent seasons, Garay is currently available as a free agent.

He was most recently on the books of Valencia but has yet to find a new club since leaving the Mestalla.

The former Argentina international suffered an ACL injury in February and asked to be released to enable Valencia to sign a replacement.

At 34 and battling back from injury, Garay may struggle to operate as a starting centre-back but could serve as an effective back-up option in the squad.

Jozo Simunovic

A name not everyone may have heard of.

The Croatian defender moved to Celtic in 2015 from Dinamo Zagreb and made 129 appearances across five seasons in the Scottish Premiership.

Simunovic, 26, suffered from injury issues at Celtic Park, which may explain why he remains in search of his next employer.

But other clubs have begun to register interest, with Augsburg, Stuttgart and Southampton among those said to be keeping tabs on the defender.
