Ferdinand tells Man United the transfer they must complete ahead of Sancho

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to target Dayot Upamecano in the final week of the transfer window.

Whilst the former United defender is a big fan of main target Jadon Sancho, he feels the England attacker would not strengthen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in the same way a new centre-back would.

Ferdinand told talkSPORT: “I’ve said since last year, a long time, I have been beating the drum to buy a centre-back for the club. It’s not going to solve every problem but one of the biggest I see at the club at the moment.

“There’s not a real dominant centre-back, the opposition centre-forwards aren’t looking across thinking ‘I’m going to do well to get some change from him’. That’s a problem for me.

“Everyone is talking about Jadon Sancho, he’s a fantastic player, a generational talent and is going to create loads of showreels for everyone. He is a player of real worth and value, look at the numbers he’s putting up as a kid – they’re phenomenal.

“You can understand interest, but for me the area is centre-back.

He added: “Upamecano is a big name pushed about. He’s young, very good on the ball, athletic, strong, mobile and players every game – which is a big point as well. He’s one you could see come and play right now.

“Koulibaly has been talked about for two or three years now, but he may have missed the boat because of his age. Between £70 million and £80 million and no resale value.

“Upamecano is the one that jumps out to me, I know Leipzig fans won’t thank me for that but when I watched the Champions League last year he was one of the most impressive centre-backs.”
