Fabio tells Manchester United how to improve Aaron Wan-Bissaka

3 min read

Former Manchester United full-back Fabio da Silva has told his old club to sign a new right-back to inspire Aaron Wan-Bissaka to new heights.

The Brazilian, who won the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson with United, is now plying his trade for Nantes in France’s Ligue 1 but is an intent follower of his former side.

He spoke exclusively to MEN Sport about Wan-Bissaka and believes the 23-year-old — who scored the opening in United’s 9-0 thrashing of Southampton on Tuesday night — is an improving talent.

But Fabio cited the example of Alex Telles and Luke Shaw on the left side of United’s defence and believes more competition for places will drive further improvement from Wan-Bissaka.

“I think he’s already improved, to be honest,” said Fabio.

“I watch a lot of Man United, I follow them, and before he arrived I thought as an offensive full-back for United, he’s not going to do it.

“Everyone knew he was a great defender, his positioning is good, but at the beginning I thought: ‘I don’t know’.

“But now, really, he has improved a lot. He can still improve more, he is young, but now he’s a much better offensive player than when he arrived. So if he keeps improving, he will be a fantastic player, I really like him.”

United were interested in former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window, though pulled away from a move for the Atletico Madrid star after he was hit with a suspension for breaching betting rules.

Fabio, however, who played a number of games at both right-back and left-back for United, thinks a right-back signing is a must this summer.

Manchester United smashed nine goals past Southampton on Tuesday night as they bounced back from disappointing results against Sheffield United and Arsenal in emphatic fashion.

The game was effectively over as a contest inside the first two minutes as Southampton were reduced to 10 men, but United still had to find the goals and they did exactly that, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (two), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James all getting on the scoresheet.

“Definitely,” he said. “If you see how Luke Shaw is doing this season, I think it’s the best season he’s been having for so long at Man United. Telles has made him improve, someone to say ‘if you’re not playing well, if you’re not concentrating, working hard, you’re going to lose your place’.

“This definitely makes you play better, so for Wan-Bissaka if they bring in a good right-back, you’re going to help him to improve.

“100 per cent, this is what makes players compete for their place, and to improve. If you play every game, you have no competition and you can start to get in a comfort zone, it’s not good for you.”
