Exclusive: Why James Garner has not left Man United on loan yet

2 min read

Two potential deals for Manchester United’s James Garner have fallen through in the past week, though the midfield starlet will still depart on loan this summer.

It is understood that Huddersfield Town and Coventry City had both been interested in season-long loan deals for the 19-year-old, though he is not expected to join either club. Other Championship clubs have since brought offers to the table, with United to make a decision soon.

The expectation at Old Trafford remains that Garner will join a Championship side for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

The club are weighing up the right option for the player, with so many clubs to choose from, wanting to ensure he will play regular football.

Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday had previously been in the mix to sign Garner on loan, though United sources have told MEN Sport the club the Swans never made official contact. They signed Morgan Gibbs-White on loan from Wolves instead. Cardiff City are not interested.

Under-23s boss Neil Wood told MEN Sport earlier this summer that a loan would seriously benefit Garner’s development. The central midfielder scored nine goals in 12 U23 appearances last season, regularly captaining the side.

“If they are not going to be part of the first team there is no reason to keep them playing in the U23s,” Wood said on Garner and Tahith Chong, who has since joined Werder Bremen on loan. “It wouldn’t be right for their own individual development.”

“They’re at the point now where they need to go play in the league, play in a first-team environment, playing in those games every week where they are going to be stretched and find it hard.

“The incentive is there, it is not like they’re going on loan and we are trying to find an exit strategy for them.

“They are going on loan to show how good they are, to show what they can do and to make an impact at the club they are going to be at, and hopefully come back to be a Manchester United player.”
