Exclusive: Man United schedule medicals for Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles

Manchester United have scheduled medicals for Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles on Sunday evening.

Cavani, 33, and Telles, 27, are both due at United’s Carrington training complex before the international transfer deadline day on Monday, The MEN understands one medical is expected to take place at 5pm and the other at 9pm.

United have agreed terms with Cavani, a free agent since he was released by Paris Saint-Germain, and reached a breakthrough in negotiations for Porto left-back Telles before he goes on international duty with Brazil.

Odion Ighalo’s dismal form since the Premier League restarted in June has convinced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to move for an alternative number nine in Cavani, who scored 197 goals in his seven years with PSG and became the club’s all-time leading scorer. United extended Ighalo’s loan until January 30 in May.

A move for Cavani appealed to the United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in 2014 until Louis van Gaal was appointed as manager and passed on the Uruguayan.

Cavani has not played a competitive match since PSG’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on March 11 but his imminent arrival will give Solskjaer an additional attacking option following Ighalo’s slump in form and the struggles of Daniel James. Ighalo and James were omitted from the matchday squad against Tottenham.

The departure of Diogo Dalot on a season-long loan move to AC Milan gave United leverage to press ahead with a move for Brazil international Telles.

United were on the lookout for a left-back last year but cooled their interest after the emergence of Brandon Williams. Injury to Luke Shaw at the end of last season and Williams’ struggles persuaded United to move for a specialist left-back in the left-footed Telles.

United moved for Telles after Sergio Reguilon joined Sevilla and Ajax rebuffed a tentative loan enquiry for Nicolas Tagliafico.
