Exclusive: Man United player Fosu-Mensah close to Bayer Leverkusen transfer

3 min read

Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is close to agreeing a move to Bayer Leverkusen.

The MEN understands Fosu-Mensah, 23, is set to join Leverkusen, currently third in the Bundesliga, for a fee of around £1.5million after he rejected United’s offer of a new contract earlier this season.

Ajax and Hertha Berlin have also pursued Fosu-Mensah, out of contract at the end of the season, and United were aware of interest from German clubs when they triggered the one-year extension in Fosu-Mensah’s deal last year.

Fosu-Mensah is believed to prefer a return to former club Ajax but sources close to the player accept that is unlikely.

Despite making only three starts for United in nearly four years, Fosu-Mensah’s reputation on the continent is favourable, having attained three Netherlands caps, and he started in United’s first game of the season against Crystal Palace.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all but confirmed Fosu-Mensah was expected to leave on Friday, with the only uncertainty as to whether it would be this month or on a free in the summer.

“I’m not sure if he will stay or if he’s going to take an option now,” Solskjaer said. “He’s not played enough, so of course he’s been allowed to speak to clubs with a view to leaving now in January.

“It’s difficult when you have good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game-time. He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again.

“It might be end of January or in the summer where he finds somewhere else, he’s working hard so he’s ready for a move for any club he feels ready for.”

Brandon Williams started ahead of Fosu-Mensah at right-back in the FA Cup third round win over Watford but is eager for regular playing time and is generating interest from Southampton and Newcastle.

Solskjaer said Williams, 20, was ‘one of the positives’ against Watford but if United were to let him go on loan they would be short of specialist cover at full-back. Axel Tuanzebe, a centre-back, excelled at right-back in the Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Everton last month.

Odion Ighalo is certain to leave United at the end of the month when his loan expires and the club are looking for buyers for Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo, who will not have their contracts extended beyond this season.

United signed Fosu-Mensah from the Ajax academy in 2014 and, although a midfielder by trade, Fosu-Mensah came on at left-back for his debut aged 18 against Arsenal in February 2016. He made his full debut at centre-back against Watford three days later.

Louis van Gaal primarily played Fosu-Mensah at right-back, where he started in United’s FA Cup quarter-final and semi-final wins over West Ham and Everton in 2016. The Dutchman spent 2017-18 on loan at Crystal Palace and was loaned to Fulham the following season.
