Exclusive: Cavani and Greenwood in Man United squad vs Chelsea

2 min read

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has included Edinson Cavani in Manchester United’s provisional squad for the Premier League visit of Chelsea.

Harry Maguire is also back after missing the win over Paris Saint-Germain, while Mason Greenwood has returned having not featured since the 6-1 loss to Tottenham on October 4.

Deadline day signing Cavani, 33, started training with his teammates last week but did not travel to France for the Champions League win over his former club PSG.

However, Solskjaer has named Cavani in his squad for United’s third home game of the season on Saturday.

Solskjaer suggested on Friday morning Cavani would be involved at Old Trafford. “I hope and expect all three of them to be available for selection,” Solskjaer said of Cavani, Harry Maguire and Mason Greenwood. “Of course, we’ve got a training session this morning but they’ve all got a chance, all of them.

“There are different reasons: Edinson wants to tick all the boxes that he’s gone through in his programme to be ready and make an impact. His last preparation is going to be today and then I will have a discussion. Yesterday seemed positive with Mason and Harry.”

United have returned to their favoured pre-match base of The Lowry Hotel, where they last stayed on the eve of the Manchester derby on March 8.

Solskjaer has allowed the United players to report at Old Trafford separately for home games but that arrangement has ended after a run of four home league games without a win.

United were held to a draw by West Ham and Southampton at the end of last season and have suffered defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham this term. Their last victory at Old Trafford was in their Europa League round-of-16 second leg against LASK.

Anthony Martial serves the second of his three-match suspension this weekend. Brandon Williams, Marcos Rojo and Facundo Pellistri played for the Under-23s on Friday night against Everton.

Alex Telles is temporarily residing at The Lowry following his move from Porto, so was not accounted for when the United coach arrived.
