Erling Haaland beats Greenwood, Foden and Torres to Golden Boy award

2 min read

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has won the 2020 Golden Boy award following a breathtaking first year with the German club.

The prize is handed to the best played aged 21 or under from one of the top leagues in Europe, meaning Haaland beat the likes of Mason Greenwood, Phil Foden and Ferran Torres.

Last year, Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix was awarded with the honour following his wonderful year in the Spanish capital.

This year, Haaland – who has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past – beat the likes of Jadon Sancho, Alphonso Davies, Greenwood, Ansu Fati, Foden and Torres.

Barcelona wonderkid Fati came in second-place in the voting, with Bayern Munich left-back Davies completing the top three. United transfer target Sancho came fourth, with Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga coming in fifth-place.

For the Manchester trio: Greenwood, Foden and Torres – it’s been a fantastic year, with all three of them establishing themselves as some of Europe’s finest young talents.

Greenwood has scored 16 goals in the past 12 months for United, showing his tremendous ability to shoot just as well with both feet, and earning his England debut as a result. The United attacker has scored twice this season in eight games in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side.

It’s also been an excellent 12 months for Foden of Manchester City, as well as the England national team. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored 12 goals over the last year and has also been in brilliant form in recent games, with Foden scoring twice for England in their 4-0 win over Iceland in midweek.

For Torres, the Spaniard has completed a big-money move to City in the last 12 months, signing from Valencia in the summer transfer window. So far this season, the 20-year-old winger has scored four times for Pep Guardiola’s team, as well as another four for the Spain national team – including a hat-trick in their recent 6-0 win over Germany.

Despite all of their fantastic years, it was Haaland who claimed the award – and it’s easy to understand why, with the Norway striker netting 44 times in all competitions during the 2019/20 season.

Only Robert Lewandowski (81.2) had a better minutes-per-goal record than Haaland (81.7) in the German top-flight.

Likewise, Fati – who has established himself as one of Barcelona’s finest talents at such a young age – and Davies, who personally, has had a great year, and has also played in a hugely successful Bayern Munich team.
