Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville claims the club blocked Jose Mourinho from signing Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng during his final summer at Old Trafford.

Mourinho spent two-and-a-half years at the Theatre of Dreams before being sacked last December.

The Portuguese was furious with United’s perceived lack of investment and he was adamant that the club should meet Leicester’s £75m valuation for Harry Maguire.

Mourinho sought alternatives and phoned Bayern Munich ace Boateng about a move to Old Trafford.

The Bundesliga giants were demanding an extortionate fee for the defender and Neville, who says the club have learned their lesson, claims executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward blocked the deal.

‘What the Glazers and Ed Woodward have realised in the last 18 months is that they’ve stopped saying ‘yes’ to managers. Jose wanted to sign Boateng for £50M,’ Neville told Sky.

‘Bayern Munich don’t let anyone go that’s half decent. We’ve been burnt on Bastian Schweinsteiger and they obviously didn’t want to pay the money for Maguire at the time – so that’s cost them money in the end.’

United were the biggest spenders in the transfer window, signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James.

However, they recouped £74m from selling Romelu Lukaku meaning their net spend was roughly £70m.
