Dortmund chief reiterates Haaland stance with Sancho to Man United comparison

2 min read

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has reiterated that he expects Erling Haaland to stay at the Bundesliga club this summer, likening his current situation to that of Jadon Sancho a year ago.

Last summer Manchester United made England international Sancho their top target but cooled their interest over concerns about the overall financial costs of a deal.

Dortmund made it clear they would only sell Sancho for a fee of £108m and refused to negotiate a lower fee, the same stubborn stance they have taken with Haaland ahead of the summer window.

Watzke insists there will be no cut-price sales from Dortmund this summer and reiterated that top players will only be sold if a team can match their own valuations.

“I do get tired of it,” Watzke told BBC Sport. “Last summer, everybody in England, everybody in Europe, every journalist told the public ‘Jadon Sancho will play for Manchester United or wherever’. But he is still playing for Borussia Dortmund. Now everybody writes ‘Erling Haaland will next season play for Real Madrid or for Barcelona, or for this or this’.

“The only way is to look after 1 September at where he is playing. I think I know where he will be playing but that is all I have to say.”

Dortmund are currently fifth in the Bundesliga and look on course to miss out on Champions League football next season, but Watzke insists their stance won’t change no matter what happens between now and the end of the season.

He added: “When Covid-19 struck, we had no debt. Not one euro. Because of that, it is a comfortable situation. We do not have to sell a player. That is important.

“The rich clubs in the world, they must know when they want a player from Borussia Dortmund there are two possibilities. The first is that I tell them they have no chance. Other times, I will tell them ‘this is the price’. Then they must know this is the price. It is not another price.

“We are very clear. We are very honest.”
