Donny van de Beek most likely envisaged his debut season at Manchester United to have some tricky spells, but he probably didn’t imagine he’d be benched for the majority of the campaign.
The 24-year-old Dutch international has barely featured at all considering the Red Devils parted ways with £40m for his services, and he showed early promise with a debut goal in the opening day defeat at home to Crystal Palace.
However, while United’s fortunes have improved since that September afternoon, van de Beek’s have worsened, despite showing glimpses of his talent whenever he has been afforded the luxury of minutes on the pitch.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opted to use a number of his other midfield options, including Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Fred and even ageing duo Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata ahead of van de Beek.
The fact that he has been handed just two Premier League starts all season has led some to believe the midfielder could be plotting an exit route from Old Trafford as early as this summer.
