Donny van de Beek sent warning ahead of Manchester United debut

2 min read

Dutch great Ruud Gullit has warned new Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek to avoid becoming a ‘a second Davy Klaassen’ ahead of his debut season in the Premier League.

Van de Beek became United’s first signing of the summer when the club confirmed the transfer from Eredivisie champions Ajax, in a deal that could rise up to £40.1million.

The 23-year-old rose through the ranks at the famed Ajax academy and made his name in the Amsterdam club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season.

He becomes the latest homegrown star to leave Ajax for the Premier League but not all of them had the success that was expected of them.

The prime example is former captain Klaassen, who joined Everton for £24.3million in 2017 but failed to live up to expectations and left a year later to Werder Bremen for half the price, having made just 16 appearances.

Though the future already looks much brighter for Van de Beek after he impressed in his first appearance for the club in a friendly against Aston Villa at the weekend, Gullit has warned him not to follow in Klaassen’s footsteps – especially as they play in a similar position.

“I look forward to seeing Donny van de Beek at Manchester United,” he wrote in De Telegraaf.

“What immediately occurred to me is that he should be careful not to become a second Davy Klaassen. Van de Beek is a younger copy of Davy in terms of play.

“Klaassen chose Everton, but the game of those two comes into its own most in an offensive squad, and therefore it should be easier for Donny at United than it was for Klaassen at Everton.

“The latter was snowed under. United plays a game in which Donny can flourish, but at the same time, he remains dependent on his fellow players as attackers.

“And is he allowed to play at his favourite spot? Because it is now occupied by the Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes.

“Van de Beek will also have to get used to being under a magnifying glass every day. Depay can talk about that.”
