Dozens of Ajax supporters have gave Donny van de Beek a grand farewell ahead of his move to Manchester United.

Van de Beek became United’s first summer arrival last week after signing a five-year contract with the option of an additional year following his £34.6m transfer from Ajax.

The Dutchman was widely expected to join Real Madrid this summer and his agent confirmed Arsenal and Barcelona were among the clubs vying for his signature.

However, it was United who managed to secure the deal ahead of the new Premier League season starting this weekend.

And the Dutchman was given the perfect send off after the Netherlands’ Nations League clash with Italy at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

According to reports from Holland, supporters sang to Van de Beek, set fireworks off and thanked him for his commitment to the Dutch club.

Van de Beek, who was visibly surprised by the ovation, told the fans: “Boys, keep the league title here.”

“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that,” Van de Beek said after his deal was confirmed.

“I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.

“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax, I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club. I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.

“Everyone has told me how amazing the Old Trafford atmosphere is and I am looking forward to experiencing that, once it is safe for the fans to return.”
