Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is unsure if Liverpool need rumoured transfer target Thiago and believes Kalidou Koulibaly would be an ‘excellent’ signing.
With the likes of Chelsea already active in the transfer market, completing the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Liverpool may face increased competition for their Premier League crown next term.
Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago is one of the names that has been linked with a switch to Anfield, but Berbatov feels the Spaniard isn’t an essential signing.
The ex-Red Devils forward told Betfair: ‘I see they’ve been linked with Thiago, and I like him, but if he comes, who doesn’t play so he can start?
‘He can play with Fabinho and [Jordan] Henderson and they will be even more powerful, but I’m not certain they need him.’
Liverpool, United and Manchester City are among the clubs reportedly interested in Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who is rated as one of the best centre-backs in world football.
Liverpool’s spending is likely to be restricted due to the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis, however, Berbatov believes the defender would be a top addition for Klopp’s side in an ideal world.
‘I’m not sure they need to change too much, maybe a centre-back better than Joe Gomez to play with Van Dijk,’ he added.
‘Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli would be an excellent signing, but apart from that the Reds have an excellent team.’
