David de Gea warned over Manchester United place by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

2 min read

David de Gea has been warned his place is not secure in the Manchester United team after his errors in the 3-3 draw with Everton.

De Gea, 30, fumbled the ball into the path of Abdoulaye Doucoure for Everton’s first and was widely criticised for his feeble attempt to thwart Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s 95th minute equaliser.

United have the worst defensive record in the Premier League top 10 and De Gea has started in all but two of their 23 league fixtures.

Dean Henderson returned to United in the summer and signed a five-year contract but has been restricted to 225 minutes of playing time in the league and there have been calls for him to replace De Gea throughout the campaign.

“Every player has to earn the right to earn his place, of course,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “We’re a squad with competition and that applies to absolutely every single one in the team – and that is the same for every single one of us.”

Henderson, 23, is almost certain to start against West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round on Thursday night, having played in all six of United’s domestic cup ties this season.

The England international enjoyed a fine season with Sheffield United in the Premier League last term but Solskjaer has stayed loyal to De Gea, despite his questionable form in the last two years.

Former United skipper Gary Neville lamented De Gea’s timidness in failing to close down Calvert-Lewin.

“David de Gea, there, at the end. He doesn’t even come in line with the ball,” Neville said.

“I think you want the goalkeeper to come, as Jamie [Redknapp] said there, and eat the striker. You just want your goalkeeper to come out there and absolutely take him out. Goalkeepers are so quick off their line nowadays.

“It wasn’t a great night for the goalkeeper, it wasn’t a great night for the centre-backs either and we’ve known from the start Manchester United needed a stronger centre-back pairing. That hasn’t changed. No point going on about it tonight. It’s cost them.”

United suffered their worst top-flight defensive season in 40 years in 2018-19 but fared better last term, shipping 36 goals in 38 games. They are already six goals short of conceding that total with 15 matches remaining.
