David Alaba gives fresh transfer update amid Man City links

2 min read

Premier League clubs are on alert after David Alaba announced that he will be leaving Bayern Munich in the summer.

Alaba has previously been linked with a move to Manchester City, though it is understood he is not currently a transfer target for them.

Rivals Liverpool and Chelsea have also been credited with an interested in the 28-year-old defender, while Real Madrid are said to be leading the race to secure his services.

Alaba will call time on a successful 12-year career with Bayern when his contract expires at the end of June.

The versatile Austria international said at a press conference on Tuesday: “I have decided to do something new.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. I have not yet made the decision where to go.

“I have personally decided to see something new, to look for a new challenge. That certainly took its time.

“It’s no secret that my agent is negotiating with other clubs.

“I am looking for a new challenge to develop myself as a person on and off the pitch.

“Where can I continue to play football successfully? That will certainly be important in my decision.”

Bayern this week agreed a deal to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig in anticipation of Alaba’s impending departure.

Alaba can operate in defence or midfield – but primarily at centre-back or left-back.

He has been touted by some as an answer to City’s left-back issues, with Benjamin Mendy seemingly out of favour at the moment under Pep Guardiola, having not featured in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

However, Joao Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte have filled in admirably at times, while the recent form of Oleksandr Zinchenko could make signing a new left-back less of a priority.
