Dalot sends message to Man United as AC Milan move confirmed

2 min read

Diogo Dalot has signed a season-long loan deal with AC Milan, the Serie A giants have confirmed.

The right-back has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his start against Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night was his first appearance of the season.

Dalot fell below Timothy Fosu-Mensah when it came to options at right-back towards the end of last season and with United also pursuing a deal for Alex Telles before the transfer window closes tomorrow he could fall further down the list of options for Solskjaer, with Brandon Williams likely to move to right-back as cover.

An AC Milan statement read: “AC Milan is delighted to announce the signing of defender José Diogo Dalot Teixeira on loan from Manchester United FC.

“Born in Braga (Portugal) on 18 March 1999, Diogo Dalot came through the youth ranks at FC Porto before making his first-team debut in 2017. During the 2017-18 season, Dalot made 8 appearances and won the Primeira Liga with the Portuguese team. In 2018 he moved to Manchester United where he made 35 appearances, scoring 1 goal.

“The defender has chosen to wear jersey number 5.”

Dalot took to Instagram after the move was confirmed, writing: “I’ve learned a lot in these two years. I’ll be rooting for you, Reds.”

Dalot was signed for £19million by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2018 but after a bright start to his Old Trafford career he has faded from view under Solskjaer.

The 21-year-old has played six minutes of Premier League football across three substitute appearances since his last start. which came in the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle in October 2019.

He is the latest United player to move to Serie A, following Andreas Pereira’s loan move to Lazio earlier this week, while Ashley Young, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku are all at Inter Milan.
