CHRIS SUTTON: I saw a Manchester United team that downed tools in embarrassing defeat against Spurs

2 min read

Gutless. Absolutely gutless. We cannot pretend the red card did not have an impact but even when you’re down to 10 men there are ways to lose a game of football and this wasn’t one of them. Manchester United gave up.

I normally hate accusations of players ‘downing tools’ — any self-respecting professional shouldn’t entertain doing that — but that is just what we saw from United on Sunday.

Their body language was pathetic from the moment they lost Anthony Martial and they didn’t do the basics.

I tell my kids to stop the opposition from taking quick free-kicks — think about the worst-case scenario and prevent it from happening.

Yet that was how Harry Kane and Son Heung-min gave Tottenham a lead they would never lose. For all of this you have to look at the manager.

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot motivate this group then that’s a problem. Jose Mourinho’s biggest win at Old Trafford in two years as manager of United was 3-0 against Tottenham. In the end this could have been so much more than 6-1.

Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Co made multiple mistakes but we also have to applaud Kane and Son. They put United to the sword but Solskjaer’s players helped them do that.
