Bruno Fernandes makes admission about Manchester United goal record

2 min read

Bruno Fernandes joked that “penalties help” when reacting to his Manchester United goal record so far.

Fernandes’ two goals in United’s 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir took him to 20 goals in 35 appearances for the club since his January arrival from Sporting Lisbon. That is the fastest any United midfielder has reached that milestone.

And although Fernandes passed on penalty-taking duties to Marcus Rashford in the Champions League victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, he admitted that many of his United goals so far have been from the spot. He believes he can offer even more, as he told MUTV after the Basaksehir game.

“Penalties help, everyone will say that for sure,” laughed Fernandes. “I’m happy for that, my teammates have helped me for sure. It was really important that everyone helped me in the first games, the first days, so everything I’m doing on the pitch is with the help of my teammates and staff and everyone.

“It’s important for me, but most important for me is helping the team and I think i can help a bit more.

Fernandes also reacted to his two goals against Basaksehir and revealed he has always worked on scoring goals from long range, as he showed a with a thunderous strike to open the scoring for United at Old Trafford.

“I think it’s the first one [for] the club I do from almost outside the box,” he added. “But it’s something I’ve worked on since a kid and I hope to get more goals like this.

“You always have to believe in the mistakes when you go onto the crosses into a box, you have to believe the keeper will leave the ball, or the defender make a mistake. In that moment it was like this, I believed something would happen, the keeper made a mistake and I was there to score a goal.

“The job is done, three points are most important. We have two games and six points to win. It doesn’t matter if we only need one more point, we need to try to win.”
