Bruno Fernandes explains bizarre Fred celebration in Spurs victory

3 min read

Bruno Fernandes has explained that he had ‘to do something different’ to celebrate a rare goal from Fred.

The Brazilian got on the score-sheet for only the fourth time in his 112 appearances for United against Tottenham on Sunday, as he buried a rebound after Edinson Cavani saw his shot saved.

The strike brought United back level after they had fallen behind in the first-half and set Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side up to go on and claim a 3-1 victory.

Fred hadn’t scored for United since February 27, 2020, when he actually bagged twice in a 5-0 win over Club Brugge in the Europa League, and as a result Fernandes wanted to make his goal even more memorable.

As Fred was getting back to his feet after skidding in celebration, he was promptly pushed back to the ground by Fernandes as both laughed at the unlikely scorer.

United’s No.18 has now explained his reason for the strange celebration.

“So [it was] because Fred normally never scores,” he told United’s in-house media. “So, when he scores, we have to do something different.

“It will be the next goal in one year because I think the last one he scored for us was against Club Brugge, one year ago almost or maybe more.

“We have to make something to remember that goal.”

Manchester United fought back superbly to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

After a VAR row following United’s disallowed goal in the first half, Son Heung-Min opened the scoring for Spurs. But United came roaring back in the second half to win, with goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Grenwood.

Fernandes has spoken in the past about how he wants to see Fred add more goals to his game.

“I was in the dining room with Fred and, on MUTV on the television, they were playing all Paul Scholes’s goals in a Manchester United shirt,” the Portuguese told the UTD Podcast last year.

“We had eaten, but we just stayed there to watch all of the goals of his. And it was funny because I was talking to Fred, and I said to him: ‘You see what Paul Scholes is doing, you need to be more closer to the goal because, if not, you will never score! And then, in that game, Fred scored twice!”
