Berbatov urges Man United to change transfer priority before deadline

2 min read

Dimitar Berbatov has urged Manchester United to prioritise a defensive signing in the final few days of the transfer window.

United have until 11pm on Monday October 5 to make additions following a very frustrating summer for many fans. Donny van de Beek remains the only incoming, though United are pursuing deals for Alex Telles from Porto and a right-wing signing, amid interest in Jadon Sancho and Ousmane Dembele.

But former Old Trafford favourite Berbatov has reiterated his belief the club are getting their priorities wrong, and wants a key defensive acquistion in the next few days.

“Before the window closes on Monday, United need to strengthen at the back,” he said in his Betfair blog. “They are vulnerable at the moment, making mistakes that are coming from tactical errors, like poor positioning and awareness.

“They are reportedly still trying to sign Jadon Sancho but it is at the back where they really need reinforcements.”

Berbatov believes United will be in for a tough afternoon against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

He again has highlighted United’s defensive frailties as an area Jose Mourinho’s side could exploit, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in attack.

“Sunday’s match at Old Trafford is so important for United and Spurs,” added Berbatov. “They both have weaknesses and their strengths lie in attack. Spurs have Harry Kane, and Son will possibly be fit for the weekend which would be a huge boost.

“Spurs are progressing nicely, I fell asleep at 5-2 last night [Thursday against Maccabi Haifa] and woke up to 7-2! When you score seven goals, no matter who it is against, it is a huge confidence booster going into the weekend.

“For United, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford are all world class.

“Sometimes, though, this isn’t enough – you can have amazing players but lack chemistry and consistency. Both of these teams have a way to go to reach the level of Liverpool and Man City.”
