Barcelona have decided to pursue a move for Dortmund forward Erling Haaland this summer, even if they acknowledge a transfer will be ‘difficult’ to pull off.

The Catlans met with Haaland’s representatives in Spain last week, with Mino Raiola and Alf-Inge Haaland pictured leaving El Prat airport in Barcelona to meet with president Joan Laporta.

Haaland is expected to leave the Bundesliga club this summer as a release clause in his contract means he’s available for around £62million in 2022.

Ronald Koeman has made it clear he wants to sign a top class centre forward this summer, with Memphis Depay – who is set to arrive on a free transfer – considered as a wide forward.

Barcelona were in financial difficulty before the pandemic hit and the likes of Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal were all allowed to leave last summer in a desperate bid to balance the books.

But, even with the club’s gross debt at £1.2bn, Barcelona remain keen on signing Haaland and will challenge the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United for his signature.

The club acknowledge that they cannot compete financially with those clubs at this moment in time and therefore are pessimistic about their chances of signing the Norwegian.

Haaland is said to be demanding around £600,000-a-week at his next club and that would hand a huge advantage to the likes of United and City, who are better placed to break the bank for the 20-year-old.

Those numbers would surely rule out Barcelona, particularly as the club hope to renegotiate a new deal for Lionel Messi at the end of the season when his contract runs out.
